VIDEO Badminton Footwork: Semi-specific Footwork On and Off-Court

Training variety is an important thing when it comes to practice coordination and agility. Often stationary footwork and agility ladders are used for Badminton footwork training. This article shows two different but easy organized ways to practiced it - for maximum training diversity.

Footwork is the most important thing in Badminton. One the one hand to have many options for optimal strokes you have to get to the shuttle early by using efficent footwork, on the other hand a lot of mistakes especially in beginners but also in advanced players are due to bad position in the court or to the shuttle.

The is quite some degree of specific footwork in Badminton, e.g. the scissors jump, the malay step or a lunge towards the shuttle. But these movement are relativly easy once learned. The "in-betweens" are often more relevant and often more problematic. But these movements are not specific to Badminton only -  they are fundamental movements that can be found in many game sports. You can for example easily compare elements of Badminton footwork with elements found in the footwork of tennis players or soccer goalies. These are elements like the split-step or the whole different starting and transition elements.

These elements can be and need to be trained also non-specific - to different ways that can be used in every Badminton hall are presented in the follwing two videos:
